William Landiss [Parents] was born 1 in 1769 in Granville County, NC. He died 2 in 1850 in Crawford County, IN. He married 3 Mary Henderson in 1786 in North Carolina.

In 1811 moved from Granville County NC to the Bedford County TN, Landisssettlements (established by Abram Landis on 11 Dec 1794) on the DuckRiver.

In March 1816 crossed the Ohio River into Crawford County IN with his sonJohn and a daughter. The rest of the family followed in August, 1818.John Kincaid, whose name will be found elsewhere in this genealogy, livednearby on the Little Blue Creek. Robert Field, Obadiah Vaughn and CalebLongest also had farms nearby.

This is the William Landes (born 1769) named in the 1850 Crawford County,IN census, living with his son John. He was also named "Landers" in an1828 deed.

From Roger Rice Landers:

There is a biography of John Landiss, son of William, son of John Landersand Mary Paris that was published in 1894. Included in a later editionwere some notes by Rev. William Landiss dated 1929. Wm. Landiss said thatthe family settled on the "wrong land". I have always wondered where thismight have been. As I was searching for something on the "other" Landers/Landis (Absalom Lowe Landis) in Bedford County, I found the followinginformation. According to Timothy R. Marsh (a Bedford County TNresearcher) William and Isaac Landers were living in the area of the landgrant that was issued to the family of Christopher Landers (s/o HenryLanders and Catherine Goodnight). This grant was in the Thompson Creekarea in south Bedford County, TN. Marsh found no relationship ofChristopher Landers and William or Isaac. So this must be the place theywere by mistake. Isaac is the son of William. I also found a referencefor William Landers as a tax payer in Bedford County for 1812. Accordingto the biography William left Bedford after March 1816. I also have areference for Isaac Landers as a Pvt. in Col. Newton Cannon's Company inthe War of 1812 (Tennesseans in the War of 1812 by Sistler).

Roger also has the deed [Bk. 6 pp. 530-531] of William Landiss sellinghis 1/5 part of the estate of John Landiss, 17 Jan 1828. William (Landersin that document) sold the land to William V. Taylor of Granville County,NC. This was land inherited from his father's estate. The land sold for$1.00 plus 20.00 later.

This suggests the following: Recall that Mary Paris Landers inherited theright to live on the land of her husband [John] as long as she lived ordid not remarry. In order for any of the children to sell the land, Maryhad to give up her rights to the land. This she did for $1. William thensold his 1/5 share and the other children's land sales were legitimized.

Mary Henderson was born 1 in 1770/1780 in North Carolina. She died 2 in 1850 in Crawford County, IN. She married 3 William Landiss in 1786 in North Carolina.

From William Landiss in 1935:

The story is that Mary Henderson and her sister and brother were left incharge of neighbors while the parents went back to England, on a errandsupposed to relate to the family estate. During the absence of theparents Indians attacked the settlement, and the children were takenprisoners. Because the sister had blue eyes and light hair, and thuscould not be disguised as an Indian, she was killed, but Mary and herbrother Robert, who had black hair and eyes, were saved. Mary wassupposed to have been nine or ten years old at the time of capture. Howlong she remained with the Indians is not known definitely, long enoughfor her to forget almost her own name. One statement is that she didforget it and took the name of Henderson. One story is she with otherprisoners were released under treaty with the Indians after theRevolutionary War. The other story is she was rescued by a party of whomWilliam Landis was a member, that he fell in love with her, and marriedher. Her brother Robert, was said to have been taken back to England, inherited the family estate, and was a member of Parliament. I rememberhearing one of my parents, in speaking of this story, say that Robertcame from England one time to visit his sister. How much of truth and howmuch of fiction there is in these stories I do not know. Certain is thename Henderson was carried down in the family, perhaps in the hope ofsome day inheriting an English fortune.
