Joseph Landiss, a musician of Company H, 81st Regiment, Indiana Infantry,enlisted at New Albany, IN on 14 August 1862. Joseph was described as 27years old, 5' 9" tall with blue eyes, a light complexion and light hair.His occupation was a cooper. He was taken prisoner of war 31 December1862 during the Battle of Stone's River at Murfreesboro, TN and confinedat Richmond, VA. Released on 20 Jan 1863, he rejoined his Company andcontinued as a musician and Provost Guard.
Roger Rice Landers points out that Joseph Landiss faced his cousins atthe Battle of Stone's River Dec. 1862 - Jan. 1863. Elgin Cicero Landers,his brother Flavious Landers, and their cousin John A. Landers (laterLandis) all were in the 23rd TN Infantry CSA. They all fought at Stone'sRiver.
He served as Sheriff of Crawford County 1870-1872.
