Born in Roane Co.,TN, Samuel Turner moved with his family to CapeGirardeau, MO in 1844, when he was 16. There he married Mahala JaneLandis in 1848. In 1859 he moved his family to Laclede Co., MO and livedthere until his death in 1897. He served in the Union Army from 1861 to1865, attaining the rank of Captain and was engaged in the Battle of PeaRidge among others. Mahala Jane Landis [Parents] 1 was born 2 on 10 May 1830 in Tennessee. She died 3 on 17 Sep 1887 in Morgan, MO. She married 4 Samuel Turner on 13 Dec 1848 in Cape Girardeau, MO.
From Marilyn Alford [mndalford2@cox.net]:
The relationship of Mahala Jane Landis to Jacob Landis is not proven andis an assumption based on 1) the marriage record and 2) the proximity ofthe Turner and Landis(Landers) families in the 1850 census of CapeGirardeau, MO and the 1860 census of Laclede Co., MO. In 1850 they wereprobably within a mile of each other and Mahala Jane was married toSamuel Turner. In 1860 in Laclede, MO they were side by side. By 1870Jacob Landis and family had returned to Cape Girardeau, MO. while theTurners stayed in Laclede. The 1870 census of Apple Creek Township, Cape Girardeau, MO lists JacobLandis and wife LuAnn with several more children than are in your record.
They are: Samuel & Susan, both age 8 and born in MO, Sara, age 7 born inGA?, John, age 4 born in MO. There are two women listed as "help",Elizabeth, born in KY and Savilla born in GA. These children may belongto the two women, but there is no indication of relationship. JacobLandis died prior to 1880 as his wife LuAnn is a widow on the 1880 census.
Marilyn also lists ten Turner children from 1849 through 1873.
