A letter from John Jewsbury to Richard Jewsbury is being auctioned oneBay. This folded lettersheet doesn't have any postal markings and so itwas likely hand carried, quite a ways in fact, since it was written inMeasham, England I believe. It is addressed to Mr. Richard Jewsbury,Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois, North America, and is a two and ahalf page letter written by John Jewsbury. The headline is Measham, Jan20th, 1838.

Some abstracts:

"The brotherly and christianlike letter expressing your kind feelingfor me ... ought to have had an immediate acknowledgement; but as we havehad to brew six sometimes twelve strikes of malt weekly, much more to doin the shop than we expected, strangers to trade, and I not a readywriter ..."

"I do not foresee the time when I shall enjoy with you the goodthings of America."

"Mr. Cookson has received a letter from you he has some thoughts ofsending his youngest son (John) over to you to learn farming."

"Henry Moore died last summer at the Isle of Man, his complaint wasthe brain and typhus fever."

"I have enjoyed very good health since you left England, people say Inever looked so well."

"I hold Mr. Moors land. I was allowed to mow it last year thereforehave no stock."

"Ann is pretty well she has not been troubled with the head ach somuch lately. Caroline and J. Proudman have a good school they are well."

"Mrs. J. wishes me to thank Mrs. R. for the few lines she addressedto her..."

As usual with stampless letters, after writing on one or more sides of asheet of paper, the letter was folded several times and mailed.
