From cousin Doris Edwards:

Grandpa was probably about three years old when his father, Elijah, diedof gangrene. No one knows how he got the wound. Elisa then hired a man totake her and the kids in a wagon from near Springfield in Dent County toIron Mountian, Missouri. The wagon got stuck in a creek and the man shehad hired to drive got mad and left her. They huddled under the bank ofthe river and a man came by the next day and took them to his place.Elisa died shortly after. There was a family of seven boys and two girls, whose names were unknown, who died when they were quite young. I had avolunteer look in Washington County for cemetery records for Landers, buthe didn't find anything. They probably didn't have headstones. The boyshad to separate and go live with different families after the death oftheir mother.

Benjamin then sent for Sara, three more ofhis boys, George, William (Emmett), and Jesse (Edward). His only daughterhad died earlier at the age of four while he and Mary were stilltogether. He also sent for one of Sara's children. Traveling from Wallowato Powatka meant fifteen miles by wagon or, in the winter, by sled.
