Harvey Baxter Landers, better known as Baxter, was a Captain in theConfederate Army during the Civil War. The uniform he wore is housed inthe Jacksonport Museum in Jacksonport, (near Newport) Arkansas. Baxterwas the last person to be buried in the old original Jeffery BurialGrounds established by James Jeffery of Virginia and his son, Jehoiada onJehoiada's original estate at Mount Olive, Arkansas.
There has been some confusion about the children of Baxter. Familyrecords from the Landers side of the family seemed to know nothing of thechildren by Mary Jeffery, and the Jeffery Records made no mention of hisfirst wife, or their children. I believe this account to be moreaccurate. See Willie B. Landers notes for more on this.
Harvey Baxter is listed on the 1850 census in Bedford County as Henry B.age 10.

He was with General Price on his raid throughMissouri in 1864-65, and participated in nearly all the battles fought onthe raid. In 1877 he engaged in merchandising at Lunenburg, Arkansas, under the firm title of Landers & Bros., and continued thus until 1880,when his brother sold out and a new partner, S. R. Hinkle, took hisplace. The firm became Landers & Company, and do the largest business intown. They carry a stock of goods that invoices at least $10,000,enjoying an annual trade of about $40,000. When first starting out inthis business the firm had a capital of $1,500, Mr. Landers putting up$750.
