TRAGEDY ON PINE CREEK OVER FAMILY AFFAIR

M. H. Sims of Hugo, Ok., a former resident of Lamar county, was killedabout 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon [Sep. 11, 1917] at the home of hisson-in-law, J.S. Landers, between eight and nine miles northeast of Parison the D.S. Hammond farm on Pine Creek. The tragedy was the result offamily trouble which resulted in the separation of Mr. Landers and hiswife a year or two ago and the institution of a divorce suit by Mr.Landers, which is still pending. Two of the children, boys six and eightyears old, are staying with their father and the mother has possession ofthree of them. The two little boys were the only eye witnesses to thekilling.

According to the statement of Mr. Landers the deceased arrived at hishome from Hugo in a jitney with two men who put him out at John Irwin's,half a mile from where Landers lived, and drove away about 1:30 o'clock. He and his two little boys were were in the field picking cotton and thedeceased went to where they were and drew a pistol and made him shed hiscotton sack and march in front of him at the point of the pistol toMarvin Bailey's, a neighbor living about a quarter of a mile from hishome. When he reached Mr. Bailey's the deceased stopped to talk to thelatter's wife and while he was talking to her Landers gave him the slipand went around the house and across the field to his home.

When the deceased got through talking to Mrs. Bailey and discovered thathe was gone he went to Irwin's in search of him, but failing to find him, then went to his home, Landers stated that when he saw the deceasedcoming he got his shotgun and sat out in the hall to protect himself, andthat the deceased approached the house from the back way and came aroundthe smokehouse with his pistol in his hand. As soon as he turned thecorner of the smokehouse in view of the gallery Landers fired at him witha shotgun loaded with No. 6 shot.

Only one barrel was discharged while he was about ten steps away and thecontents took effect in the lower part of his face and neck and all overthe breast. The deceased turned and walked five or six steps and fell andexpired. The two little boys of Mr. Landers were standing in the roadnear the house when the shot was fired. As soon as the shooting occuredLanders got his neighbors, Bailey and Irwin, to notify Sheriff Clarkson, who went out to the place accompanied by Deputy Sheriff McDonald andCounty Attorney Grady Sturgeon, and they found him at home waiting tosurrender, he claiming self-defense. Sheriff Clarkson brought the body ofMr. Sims to Paris in his automobile and turned it over to Emberson &Brown, undertakers, who notified his wife.
