International Photographs

Web browsers on IBM-compatible PCs do not display photographs well in the 256-color mode. If you see images in which the true color is simulated by scattered dots of one color on a field of a similar color, the 256-color (8-bit) mode is probably in use. Photos will also look better at higher resolutions, such as 800x600 or 1024x768.
There is rarely, with modern SVGA video cards, a need to use the 640x480x256 mode (640 horizontal pixels by 480 vertical pixels by 256 colors). With only 1 MB of video memory, 800x600x65K color can be supported. With 2 MB, both the 800x600x16.7M and the 1024x768x65K modes should be available.
